February 13th, 2010 admin

Gossip, first impressions, trends in the making, celebrities and style setters. This is shaping up to be the season when the runway comes to you. Hundreds of designers will present their fall collections during the monthlong runway circuit that kicked off Wednesday in New York and ends in mid-March in Paris with a stop in Milan along the way. And although the runway shows used to be exclusive events — closed to all but select editors, store buyers and stylists

Fashion Diary: Milan Fashion Week gets real
Milan grows up and covers up. That was the takeaway from the fall/winter 2010 collections, which weren’t as much about in-your-face showmanship and trends as they were about the value of heritage and craft. Facing competition from the glut of inexpensive fast fashion available at places such as H&M and Zara, where knockoffs of runway styles...
New York Fashion Week: Rising star Prabal Gurung needs to stay grounded
For some reason this season, Prabal Gurung was anointed the new kid to watch. When he staged his first runway show in the Tents on Saturday, everyone was there — department store buyers, magazine editors, even a celeb or two. Why? Who knows. Oprah's a fan, the designer has a quirky name (pronounced Praa-ball) and a cute face, he grew up...
Paris Fashion Week: At YSL, comfort is the overall winner
Reporting from Paris — In the end, the return of the Yves Saint Laurent menswear collection to the Paris runway was more a matter of calendar timing than anything else; instead of being held the Wednesday night before the official men's Paris Fashion Week kicks off, it took place in a Friday noon time slot.  Read More →
Fashion Diary: L.A. fashion designers say ‘Hello world’
Who needs a runway when a rack is better? L.A. designers Katy Rodriguez, Gregory Parkinson, Emily Jerome and Jerome C. Rousseau hosted a cocktail party Monday night at the Palihouse Holloway in West Hollywood to preview their fall lines. A few garment racks in the courtyard, a little informal modeling and some vino were all it took to make this one...
Fashion Diary: At Milan Fashion Week, fall 2010 collections look backward to ‘Mad Men’ era
“I wanted to see something that wasn't trying so hard to be new.” That was how Marc Jacobs explained his fall 2010 collection last week in New York. And the sentiment seems to be carrying over to Milan, where so far, designers are banking on retro femininity for fall, from D&G's ski bunnies to Prada's sexy secretaries....
Mode Israel says ’shalom’ to Downtown L.A. Fashion Week
Israel might not be the most well-known arbiter of fashion, but Israelis Alber Elbaz, Elie Tahari and Yigal Azrouel have become respected industry names. Elbaz, Lanvin's artistic director, works from Paris with Tahari and Azrouel, who are both based in New York. Wednesday  Read More →
Paris Fashion Week: Can’t beat it — Balmain’s military styles march to a Michael Jackson theme
Looks like Balmainia is going to continue for at least another season. Christophe Decarnin's flashy, trashy glamour has been driving the fashion world of late, and there's no stopping him now. For spring, the Balmain designer turned to the military look, with coppery metal mesh as the main stylistic element in his raucous show set to 1980s...
Fashion Diary: TV shows cashing in on their characters’ cachet
Gossip, first impressions, trends in the making, celebrities and style setters Rather than merely being paid to insert products into their shows, TV networks are moving into the clothing business themselves. Bravo tested the waters last year, partnering with Kooba to introduce four exclusive handbags worn by the lead characters on the show “NYC...
Milan Fashion Week: Missoni spins an elegant cocoon
Reporting from Milan — Instead of a traditional runway show, Missoni's Fall/Winter 2010 collection was staged as a static presentation on the evening before, in an outdoor space that felt like part barn and part patio. While the models struck poses on the wooden floorboard stage, the crowd milled about sipping Campari cocktails and nibbling...
Revolve hosts a Fashion Week launch party
“There's so much great fashion that comes out of L.A., and sometimes we get overlooked,” said Michael Mente, co-owner of Revolve, during a party Saturday night at the company's West Hollywood store feting the start of L.A. Fashion Week (or month, as it's turned out to be.) “We just wanted to celebrate that,” he...
