Paris Fashion Week: Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz drapes with a sculptor’s touch

October 4th, 2009 admin

At Lanvin, Alber Elbaz offered a stronger, more grown-up alternative to many of the season's lacy lingerie looks. The first group of satin cocktail dresses wasn't unlike what we've seen from him before, with stiff flounces at the shoulder, or curling down the sides. But when leather entered the equation, with a stunning lipstick-red dress draped and folded over one shoulder as easily as if it were silk, it was obvious we were in for something new. Elbaz has always had a sculptor's touch, as if he were working with clay instead of cloth. This …

Paris Fashion Week: Lanvin’s tribal edge
Lanvin's Alber Elbaz is the auteur of the specific brand of imperfect glamour that has dominated clothing design over the last few years. Because of him, asymmetrical ruffles, organza and grosgrain ribbon trim and unfinished seams have taken over T-shirts, jackets and dresses at every chain store on the planet, including J. Crew and Ann Taylor....

Refinery29: Jamie Bochert Headbangs to Alber in Lanvin’s 2010 Campaign
No matter how pretty a dress might be, what’s the point if it’s only good for standing around awkwardly because it’s just too fragile to do anything else with it? Busting a seam, crushing a flounce, or exposing just a little more of yourself than you meant to are all casualties of Way Too Expensive Dress problem. But fret not,...

Tommy Ton’s recent mysterious tweet about news that will “SHAKE the fashion world” has left most of us a little on-edge, and Grazia thinks that it knows what the big secret is. Paris Fashion Week: Dries Van Noten opens the week on high note; Rochas and Giles Deacon look back
It was a wonderful start to Paris Fashion Week to see a collection as focused as Dries Van Noten's. The Belgian designer pared down the ethnic embellishment and Ikat prints of spring in favor of something more tailored and military-influenced for fall. Standout pieces included a herringbone pants suit with darts pinching the waist of the jacket,...

Latest Obsession: Asymmetric Dresses
Asymmetrical dresses are enjoying a moment right now, and there’s no better example out there than the ALC Capelet Dress with Belt. It’s a V-neck jersey frock with a draped cape overly on one side and a leather belt to emphasize the waist. With ruching at the shoulders and an asymmetric hem, this 100% modal dress is very classy and...
New York Fashion Week: Could Ohne Titel be the next Donna Karan?
The most exciting thing I saw on the runway Saturday was the Ohne Titel collection. Bringing a new kind of cool to draped silk, velvet and washed leather separates by working them with athletic mesh and knit, designers Flora Gill and Alexa Adams challenged the boring vernacular of office suiting. Could we be looking at the next Donna Karan? The designers,...
New York Fashion Week: At Narciso Rodriguez and Calvin Klein, magestic minimalism
In a week that was all about paring down and cleaning up, Narciso Rodriguez and Calvin Klein's Francisco Costa were in their element. Their collections also happened to be two of New York's best. Rodriguez's clothes were all about curving lines and shadowy effects. Short dresses sliced over the collarbone to reveal flashes of bare skin...

Paris Fashion Week: Nina Ricci’s Peter Copping has excellent timing with feminine styles
From the self-assuredness of his spring collection, you would never have known that Peter Copping has only been at the helm of Nina Ricci for a matter of months. Of course the designer — who took over from Olivier Theyskens — also has the advantage of timing. His first collection for a house known for its soft femininity comes exactly...
